Michael Segal
Michael Segal is a Detroiter in the midst of many mediums: an illustrator, painter and digital image layer. His allegiance lies within fine art. Educated at Wayne State University in the Eighties, Segal concentrated on graphic design and commercial art in equal measure with painting and drawing. Throughout the Nineties he created a niche with thousands of florid, stream of conch, cartoony 4"x6" index card / magic marker art, hanging [taping and tacking, more concisely] shows at legendary coffee house Zoots and more recently detroit contemporary. Segal is now focused on large paintings, with intense to mundane to awkward imagery, signage styles and an illustrative nature . For the next six months he will use only lavender paint in varying tones on thick masonite [see picture for early example], culminating in a large-scale show in Spring 2002.
