detroit contemporary celebrates 5 years
do you remember?
One thing that has impressed me about detroit contemporary through its years of existence has been its keen ability to go where no gallery would dare go. To highlight unearthed and not yet categorized art - not because it's 'hip' but because it has foundation. Or perhaps at times simply because it defies definition and the norm. in its visitation of the many mediums of art, be it visual, audio and/or performance, dc has welcomed the very idea of art to a young generation of people who would have previously been discouraged from seeking out such matters. This is the definition of cultural enrichment, and it's a flag that dc has waved since its inception.

What a long time it's been since the first Sight:Sonic show! I had a great time that night, but my favorite memories at Detroit Contemporary came from the year or so following:
Even now I can't believe how well the all day July 4th fiasco came together back in ?99.
I bet the stains in the carpet from New Year's Eve 1999/2000 are still there (if the carpet is). Who remembers Bob hitting the pinata?
Blowing things up in the yard was fun. Coming home with Lisa on Thanksgiving night to find the door broken sure wasn't.
Playing with Basketcase in all those big rooms was so great! I remember the day Leah Colwell played drums with us especially fondly. And all the shows we put on in there! Man!
What I really really loved though, was hanging toys in the trees in the yard late at night for the neighborhood children to take the next day.
And stapling clothes to the trees under the "Take Me I?m Yours Sign". Full outfits, including shoes. Nothing ever lasted more than 2 days.
Since my time at the gallery, I have continued to paint and collage with images and sounds. I am currently in an MA program in Expressive Arts Therapy at the California Institute for Integral Studies, where I am learning to use art to help people.
The drawing I've sent is one I did in March of 2003. It was my response to the state of the world after taking part in the protests that shut down San Francisco while the United States again attacked Iraq. It helped to mitigate my anger. It was my therapy, and I'm pleased to be able to share it with you.

Remember 5 Years Ago
I remember coming down to Detroit Contemporary about a week before the first show and grabbing the roller and painting the first room. I didn't even really know Aaron at the time but I wanted to help out, knowing how tough it is to start a gallery. Lots of others were running around getting the place ready. It's always nice to have people come together to work for something good.
