Artist Biography
Karen Khalifah earned her Bachelors Degree from the College for Creative Studies in December of 2001. She concentrated her studies in printmaking and mixed media collage. While she was at college, Miss Khalifah started teaching youth art classes, both on and off campus. She has taught sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and assisted in metal and woodworking courses. Miss Khalifah is currently in Graduate school, studying towards an Art Education degree from Wayne State University.
Miss Khalifah has exhibited her work at a variety of galleries and spaces. She recently finished an installation for the Detroit Festival of the Arts. She is currently working on a commission at Emile Salon in Birmingham, MI. In February 2003, Miss Khalifah showcased designs from her clothing business at the MONA gallery in Detroit. Her company, Lady K Apparel, combines sexuality and humor into a variety of wearable materials.
Miss Khalifah focuses her current work on human relationships, suggestive comics and pornographic imagery of the past. Her screen prints combine appropriated images with the use of text as a vehicle for dialogue. Miss Khalifah's work is graphically charged and humorously driven. She combines narrative, color, and sexuality into her compositions.
