Sojourn Series
"Discovery is a joyful component of art making. The unexpected surprise of a newfound opportunity keeps the flames of reinvestigation alive in the artwork. Aaron Timlin, Director, Detroit Contemporary Gallery invited me along with several artists to participate in the Actual Size Exhibit in March, 2000. The question of creating new/different work was my first consideration or simply downsizing a current or familiar concept was an issue of choice to fit the exhibition format. My decision to combine the familiar fabric work with an expanded different approach.
The Actual Size experience has led to a variety of new works . . . the Sojourn Series. These mixed media works utilize both colorful patterned fabrics and painted Peg-board. The uniform Peg-board openings allow for the fabric to protrude from the surface. Daylight or interior light activates these elevated cone-shaped evenly-spaced sculpted forms. Each form casts an intensely directional shadow pattern depending on the amount of light exposure. The Shadow pattern reflects the evolving experience of each viewer."
