In the Detroit Film Projects, Robert Herrick works with the materiality of the photographic process. Forsaking the camera, he buries color film in sites throughout Detroit. The contact with soil exposes the film by chemical reaction. Then recovered and processed, the resulting color prints confound us with an uncanny index of each site, a mark that challenges our notion of the document.
