An Indication of Changing Tides

In recent work I have begun to examine ordinary time based events in nature. Much of this work is set in coatstal regions around the Great Lakes as well as the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States. After researching these locations I have documented changes that take place over a long period of time. In this piece I have used time lapse photography to compress the cycle of tide change. To indicate the rise and fall of tide, I built three columns four feet in height. The columns were positioned during low tide at Fifield Pt, Deer Ilse, Maine. A super-8 film camera was used to document the changing tides, and to compress a twelve and a half hour time period into less than 8 minutes of film. In addition to the film an audio field recording of the location was produced using a portable minidisc recorder. Together in an installation format the film and audio are combined to show how tide change can reveal or obscure objects. My hope is that the project will inform people of the dramatic impact tides have on coastal regions.

Remapping

In addition to this installation a separated piece consisting of three large photographs will be exhibited just outside of the installlation space. These photographs use a shipping channel as a reference point. They emphasize different increments of time, as well as the way people read nautical maps in relation to the landscape.
