"I Want to Hear What I Want to Hear"
The recent work is about protection in one way or another. One expressed architecturally, and the other graphically. Both are traps in a way. Free to draw conclusions from their appearance, we assume we understand their aggression, as well as how they will function for us. Perceived to be receptacles in which we can place our hopes and fears. Only to discover that they are simply props, staged to satisfy our desire for comfort.
The padded velvet walls hold and collect secrets. Absorbing them like a sponge. Quietly. A seductive illusion of comfort, luxury and security. We are seduced into revealing all sorts of half breathed truths. Where once uttered, we are not so certain to whom they will be repeated.
The team of players is the image of unyielding strength, padded and helmeted. Protected against all odds, the group faces us down. Certain only to them that their weak spots aren't obvious. But before you knew it, you can hear the trap door slam shut behind you. His flat image faked that they could defend themselves. They are literally images, placed on boards, tethered to the ceiling. Like a car wash sign or a Marlbourgh Man, cut out, tough against the sky, but waving in the breeze.
My work is evolving into a collection of characters placed into settings. Much like a director developing an ensemble of actors. These characters are evolving into elements that represent various aspects of human nature. I use repetition to convey sameness and ubiquity as a nod to living in a world of mass production. I also use techniques from commercial art, architecture, and theater as a way of lifting forms or images from everyday life and elevating them into something iconic. |
