The interplay of light and color makes the 'laminant' pieces of FREE's 'Lamination' at different points playful, soothing and captivating. Elementary and mysterious, a bit of background may open up the story behind Lamination and Free Multi-Medium.

It all began with a dolphin. FREE's smiling design was the logo for the legendary Detroit promotions group known simply as 'VOOM'. Importantly for FREE came an education in this school of rave technology that became much of FREE's inspiration for it's own parties beginning in 1993 @ a Hamtramck place called 'Space'. It was during this time the concept of the flyer was evolving in FREE's mind. Experimentation lead FREE to use its' own backstage passes in multiples connected together with cable ties. These high-tech quilts were the first 'Lamination' works. Then the propaganda was created: key chains, refrigerator sized magnets, toothpicks, t-shirts, book marks, towels, bags, cd cases, baby bibs and even sugar cube wrappers. FREE then moved on to create costumes with this same laminate material. While the passion for plastic and cable ties had FREE in it's grips the small wall pieces became walls. Her walls became rooms. As FREE's 'Lamination' stock list grew so did its' concept of the exhibition. 'Why not entice all the senses for a show, who says a good exhibition has to be in a gallery?' Not FREE, that is for sure. From coffee shops and buildings to banks and abandoned train station FREE takes a common environment and creates a sublime ecosystem.

In May of 1998 the first full blown Free Multi-Medium show was held in Detroit's Historical David Whitney Building. FREE transformed a dead Secretary of State office into an extraordinary venue that would make any gallery or museum owner take notice. FREE then produced the art work, costumes, music, set, propaganda, promotions and organized the catering for this month long event. Richie Hawtin, D. Wynn, Paris(Black Fu), Mike Huckaby, Ian Clark, Bileebob, Carl Craig, Helio Works, Kahn & Geared for Life are just a few of the notables FREE has worked with in the past. Whether it is d.j.ing, promoting, flyer design, environmental installation, dance, video, murals, sculpture or performance FREE has earned a reputation for an unrelenting creative energy that has driven FREE from Detroit to New Orleans to Brooklyn NY and back to Electro Town.

Detroit's first Electro Music Festival was the perfect vehicle for FREE's latest work 'Ventilation Lamination'. It was FREE's largest piece. This for Free Multi-Medium is one small step toward a goal of, 'bringing the image, material, sound, lighting and exhibition aspects closer and closer . . .Going further, pushing our senses as well as the audience. A bigger audience a bigger piece.

The most recent FREE extravaganza was unveiled at the Tangent gallery's premise exhibition June of 2002. In this newly renovated space the latest and greatest LAMINATION pieces were on display. The performance Ego Tragedy Bottom God was debuted with musical collaborations by Maersk and video collaboration with cLc101/Chris Chynoweth. On stage performances included FREE's own Mare L. Costello, as well as, Jeremy Kalio, Gehrik Mohr and Thaddius Reed. Again the mediums are merging and specific definitions of art are distorted. 'It's all Art!'

Now with freemulti-medium.com this goal is being realized on a global level. Making the connection with individuals from around the earth. Celebrating life through the exchange of creativity.

Free Multi-medium was over joyed to be invited to Detroit Contemporary's season opener this September the 14th. FREE will again show the Ego Tragedy Bottom God. For all those enthusiasts who missed it the first time around, it's truly a sight to behold, bigger, better and stronger. Check out the new images being utilized in the trailer, along with the next development of the LAMINATION 'cube'. Join in on the fun and be FREE.
