Motors of Dissent Roar at detroit contemporary's
Fourth Annual Anti-Auto Show

DECEMBER 22, 2000 (Detroit, MI): Beginning January 12, artists, filmmakers,
musicians and raconteurs will again let their motors of dissent roar as
Detroit¹s Fourth Annual North American International Anti-Auto Show
throttles the Motor City. This event, a 10-day art exhibit punctuated by
thought-provoking performances and gatherings, provides the community with
an alternative to the world's largest car commercial, the North American
International Auto Show, which invades Detroit every year. At the Anti-Auto
Show, artists of all genres probe beneath the glitz and glamour of this
year's models to examine the true and many facets of car culture, for better
and for worse.

Drawing on the success of last year's event, which was featured on National
Public Radio's "All Things Considered" and in Auto Week this years
show will feature a 10-day exhibit of slam-on-the-brakes artwork from
across the world and down the block; a raucous Gala Preview, featuring sound
explorations by Detroit's own Year of the Robot, the automated stylings of
DJ K-Car, audio wallpaper from Perspects (Ian Clark, formerly of Le Car)
transit tarot, car confessions, and transport-themed Atari; a panel
discussion on public transit in Detroit moderated by Metro Times News Editor
Curt Guyette; children's art activities; and a closing night aural
equivalent of a Monster Truck Rally with Maryland's critically acclaimed
electro-futurists, and avid bicyclists,Trans Am.

Artists and works featured in this year's show include Detroit's own toy
boys AWOL, who combine action figures, photography and slick pop culture
commentary to create "Princess Die-o-Rama" and other examinations of
auto-obsession; real-life evidence of cop-driver exchanges from Ann Arbor's
Joseph Grigley, recently featured in the Whitney Biennal; graphic
interpretations of aural automania by San Francisco video and sound artist
Anne Walsh; interpretations of life from the driver's seat by painters Tom
Rapai (Ann Arbor) and Philip Burke (Detroit); slot car filmography from
Windsor's E.I.E.I.O. Institute; a Ruscha-esque take on commuter culture from
Jay Heikes (Minneapolis); an autoerotic interchange between photographer
Nicola Kuperus (Detroit) and graphic artist Riva Sayegh (Hamtramck); a
sobering playtime experience from Slovakia's Sylvia; whimsical
transit-inspired "home" and fashion designs from Billy West (Detroit) and
Phaedra Robinson (Detroit); an interactive examination of urban sprawl from
sculptor and woodworker Andy Malone (Detroit); and two off-the-clock
examinations of the subversive sales elements employed by the other
auto show from Detroit artists and daytime exhibit-makers Roe Peterhans and
Dean Zoyes.

The Fourth Annual North American International Anti-Auto Show opens to the
public on January 13, with a formal charity Gala Preview on Friday, January
12 from 7 p.m.-12 a.m. Tickets to the future-themed Gala include sneak
peeks at this year's rollouts, drinks and hors d'oevres, entertainment (see
above), and a chance to say you attended the hippest party of the brutal
winter. Last year's guests are still talking about car karaoke, so this is
an event not to be missed! Tickets are $10 and can be reserved by calling
313-898-4ART.

Tickets to Trans Am are $12 in advance and $14 at the door, and will be
available at local, independently owned record stores, ArtCite in Windsor
and detroit contemporary gallery.

All proceeds from the Anti-Auto Show will be used to purchase bike racks for
Detroit hot spots. The Anti-Auto Show is produced by a collective of
consumerist-weary, transit-riding, bike-liking Detroiters and is
co-sponsored by CJAM (91.5 FM Windsor/Detroit) and Motormouth.org.
