A successful work of art not only finds its significance within its relationship to existing things or ideas in the world, but first finds meaning within itselfthe actual before the symbolic. Nothing is purely self-refferencial, and likewise nothing can be purely refferencial. Both of these polar aspects of art can change on the basis of context, environmental and cultural change.
